Say cheese….cake!

Today I started writing a boring post, really about nothing much.  I was lacking inspiration big time and had given myself a deadline to finish.  This did not get the creative juices flowing I tells you, quite the opposite.  Instead, I checked my emails, did the washing, watched gangnam style on youtube, checked facebook, twitter, pinterest, checked facebook, twitter, pinterest again, made myself a miso soup, chatted to a friend and watched my deadline zoom right past me.

I like to deceive people.  But don’t think badly of me.  I’m not talking about deception in the serious way, like crying game style but in the I like to cook things that look impressive and difficult but are really dead easy kinda way.  Panna cotta is one of those desserts.  I love it, you can infuse it with a million different flavours and best of all you can make it ahead of time, pop it in the fridge and bibbidi bobbed boo you have a super impressive dessert that will wow the pants off your guests.

Apricot rosemary crumble bars

“Can you stop making weird stuff and just bake a freaking chocolate cake like a normal person” is what the Dr exclaimed when he came home from work and asked me what baked deliciousness was sitting on the bench.  Having said that he had no problems scarfing down a few and claiming that they were amazing.  Also, he should know better than anyone else that I’m not normal.

Arabian pancakes with figs and orange-flower syrup

Today we’re taking the fig to the Middle East people.  Told you this little gem was versatile. This recipe was inspired by one of Nigella’s recipes for Arabian pancakes with Orange-Flower Syrup.  I have mixed it up a little here and half the figs are cooked and half them are served fresh which I think adds a lovely lightness to the dish.  You could serve this dish either as a dessert or for brunch.  It may seem like there are a lot of components to this recipe but I promise you it’s dead simple.
